05.10.2005 -- BEIJING - CHINA --

Returning from Xi'an...
We just returned to Beijing from Xi'an yesterday and have a few minutes to update the site. Should be some photos soon if not already.
In Xi'an, we went to the Terra Cotta Warriors ... the main draw there. However, we enjoyed the city more than Beijing mostly because we are figuring out how to travel better. Xi'an is a pretty nice city as well. There were lots of trees and parks. A wall surrounds what used to be the old city. It has out grown the wall by leaps and bounds. We road a tandem on the top of the wall all the way around (less than 10 miles). Since bicycles are not made for tall people, Maggie's knees were in Todd's back side. We also took a walk on the wall at night. It was great. There was lots of action going on. We went past 2 outside dance areas. Ever seen line dancing to techno music? By the way, the top of the wall is about 3 stories high and 3 cars wide. It is massive and allows for a great vantage point.
In Xi'an, we found our favorite restaurant so far. The menu was in Chinese, so we had to be creative when ordering. Eventually, we had the people at the Hostel write down a couple dishes in Chinese and took the list with us. The most we paid there was 28 Yuan or about $3.50 (for both of us and beer included). Crazy, eh? Keep in mind that we are finding the dives. Like in the US, the best food is sometimes in the not so good looking establishments. This place had a line outside. So it was a sure bet.
Turns out that the people are definitely enamored with Maggie, but they are also curious about Westerners in general. Others we have talked with, mention the stares and photographs by the Chinese. We went to the pagoda and water fountain (understatement - more like the water show at the Bellagio in Vegas) in Xi'an and must have gotten a dozen photo's with people we can't even have a conversation with.
By the way, we got Todd's ATM card back. It was still in the machine. Whew!!!
