07.19.2005 -- KOH PHANGAN & CORAL BAY - THAILAND --

Thailand: Island Snorkeling, Boat Rides, and Fried Pineapple...
 |

While we are in Sri Lanka right now, we still have a few things left to add from Thailand. We spent most of our time in the islands. We never made it to Koh Samui as we had plenty of fun at Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. It has been very nice hanging out. Maggie has actually figured out how to relax and enjoy herself... it has been quite a revelation.
Full moon parties are the thing to do on Koh Phangan. However, we were not there during the full moon. In fact it is the full moon tonight. Also, the stories we have heard about the full moon parties remind us a little of some of the stupid things our friends did in College (we never did anything stupid in college). The stories of young adults washing up on the shore the next morning are abundant and really the reason we decided to steer clear. Maybe next time we will witness it from a distance...
So, we spent our time on the other side of the island... This is the north side if you happen to look at a map of the island. There are some very nice places. Initially, we stayed at Coral Bay which near a town called Chaoluklum, a small fishing village with a decent beach and some decent snorkeling. The people at Coral Bay were wonderful. The owner's daughter-n-law is from Israel ... also named Maggie but spelled Maguy. We spent time there that we got to know her 3 year old son, Tom. Todd threw him around around that they bonded quickly. When it comes to human jungle gyms, language barriers do not matter. Tom was launching himself into Todd's arms in no time at all.
In addition, we made friends with a couple of Danes - they were really "special". Their names were Katja and Jacob (pronounced like catya and yacob). We spent at least a week with them pretty much morning, noon and night. We tried to shake them a couple time and even gave them our gmail account (inside joke)... but they kept coming back. Actually, we had a great time with them snorkeling, kayaking and eating... lots of food and beers.
Speaking of food, Todd got hooked on fried pineapple... which is the same as an apple fritter more or less but made with pineapple instead. They serve it with honey and Todd had it with nearly every meal. The other desert that was quite good was banana fritter served with chocolate sauce. You would guess that having eaten as much as we have, we might have gained some weight, but Todd has lost at least 10 lbs and maybe 15. Maggie has shed a couple as well.
After 8 days at Coral Bay, we followed the Danes to Bottle Beach which is a short longtail boat ride around the point. the swimming at Bottle Beach was great as was the beach itself. We also rented kayaks there and went over to yet another beach east of bottle beach that was pretty amazing. At Bottle beach there is a nice coral area as well great for snorkeling where Todd and Jacob saw a Ray.
As much as we hated to leave our new friends and the lazy lifestyle, we had to get back to Bangkok for some shopping and our flight to Sri Lanka. The Dane begged us to stay, but at some point you just have to cut the cord - cheers, Katja and Jacob. We hope to see you again soon.
In Bangkok, we stayed in another part of town. Our first stay in Bangkok was not all that positive as we stayed near Khoa San Road which is somewhat like a spring break gone bad. This time we stayed downtown a short walk to the sky train which took us to the weekend market... where there are 2000 shops - need some chopsticks?
